What a family recipe app should actually do

Most recipe apps are grocery lists with a search bar. Heirloom is a cookbook. It holds the recipes your family already cooks — not the ones a stranger pinned last Tuesday. Save them from voice, from a handwritten card, from a TikTok, from a web link. Organize them the way your family thinks about them. Cook from them on your phone, your iPad, or print a hardcover copy for the shelf.

A family recipe app should respect that the recipes matter before the app does. Heirloom starts private and stays private. You share with specific family members, by name. Your grandmother’s Sunday sauce is not an engagement metric.

How Heirloom is different from recipe organizers

Most recipe-manager apps are optimized for people who cook nightly from the internet. They’re good at what they do — meal plans, pantry databases, grocery integrations. Heirloom is optimized for a different job: keeping the recipes that came from the people you love before those recipes are gone.

Every recipe in Heirloom remembers who added it and whose original it adapts. Every cookbook is a keepsake, not a collection. Every template is designed to look like a book, not an inbox. If you want to cook something new tonight, use a recipe manager. If you want to keep your mother’s lasagna the way she makes it, use Heirloom.

Private by default — no feeds, no algorithms, no public profiles

Heirloom does not have a discover tab. It does not have followers. Your cookbooks are not searchable by strangers. Voice transcription happens on your phone — the audio never reaches a server unless you choose to share it. When you do share, you invite a specific family member by username or email; they accept, and it lands in their box.

There is no "public" mode. There is no algorithmic feed deciding what you see. The only recipes in your cookbook are the ones your family put there.

Your family’s recipes are their story.

Keep the story.
